Free-agent fullback Steve Smith of the Raiders has signed a three-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Smith, a third-round draft choice in 1987, was with the Raiders for seven years.

Rusty Wallace set a Pocono (Pa.) International Raceway qualifying record with a lap of 164.558 m.p.h. in a Ford while winning the pole position for Sunday’s UAW-GM Teamwork 500 stock car race. . . . Emerson Fittipaldi won the provisional pole for the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix Indy car race, with a lap at 106.261 m.p.h. over the 2.1-mile, 14-turn course. . . . Jean Alesi put a Ferrari on the provisional pole for the Canadian Grand Prix, touring the 15-turn, 2.753-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal in 1 minute 26.277 seconds, at 114.872 m.p.h.

A day after her father said she would leave a substance abuse clinic next week, Jennifer Capriati checked out of the facility in Miami, accompanied by her mother.

Todd Martin upset Stefan Edberg, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament in London. Edberg, in a monthlong slump, double faulted four times in the final game.

Top-seeded Pete Sampras won, 6-1, 6-4, over eighth-seeded Wayne Ferreira and will play Jan Apell in the semifinals. Martin will play Christo van Rensburg.

Brenda Shultz served 22 aces in beating Iva Majoli, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0, and moved into the semifinals of the Birmingham women’s grass court tournament in England. Shultz’s 22 aces topped her own record of 16, set at Wimbledon in 1989 against Monica Seles.

Shultz will play second-seeded Lori McNeil in one semifinal, and top-seeded Zina Garrison-Jackson will meet Nathalie Tauziat in the other.
