BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Hamilton Finally Folds His Season
Satisfied that his teammates were OK with his decision, Milwaukee Brewer outfielder Darryl Hamilton went on the disabled list to have season-ending surgery on his right elbow.
Hamilton, a lifetime .297 hitter, learned before the season that he had a bone spur and partially torn ligament in his right elbow that required reconstructive surgery.
He tried to play as long as possible until teammate Jody Reed advised him to have the operation.
“I think I’ve been going through this mode where I felt guilty,” Hamilton said. “And I didn’t just want to pick up a check every two weeks and not do something to earn it.”

Cincinnati left-hander John Smiley got a shot of cortisone in his pitching shoulder and probably will skip his next start.
