Lakeway Wins Mother Goose
Making amends for her loss to Sardula in the Kentucky Oaks, Lakeway rolled to a 4 1/4-length victory over 27-1 shot Cinnamon Sugar in the $200,000 Mother Goose Sunday at Belmont Park.
Winning for the fifth time in six races, Lakeway went head-and-head with 7-10 favorite Inside Information for most of the 1 1/8 miles, put her away after some rapid splits (45 1/5 and 1:08 3/5) and won in a stakes-record 1:46 2/5 under Kent Desormeaux. She paid $4.60 as the second choice.
“I told Kent to ride like it was a match race,” said trainer Gary Jones. “That’s what it looked like on paper. Don’t let (Inside Information) get too far away.”
