Production of Contraceptive Sponge to Resume: The maker of the only contraceptive sponge on the U.S. market said it is resuming production after correcting problems at the factory that government inspectors said could cause contamination. Whitehall-Robins began steps on Monday to restart production of its Today Sponge in the next two weeks, spokeswoman Karen Brown said. “Our best estimate as far as when Today Sponge might be on store shelves (is) . . . from one to three months from now,” she said. The announcement came after media reports that the company voluntarily stopped making the sponges in January after the Food and Drug Administration found during an inspection last summer that air in the production facility was not as sterile as it should be.
