Builders’ Glossary

Share

Those who tour New Home 2000 at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Francisco will need this glossary:

* The Sunday room. This is a light, airy space with a single chair, an indoor fountain, a bank of skylights and a glass wall with doors that open onto a redwood deck. Designers envision it as “a place to read the newspaper while drinking coffee.”

* The dream room. An open, flexible space off the master bedroom, it features skylights, a breakfast bar, built-in cabinets and a desk with space for a computer. The idea is that one person can work on projects in the dream room while the other rests or watches television undisturbed in the bedroom.

“You can make that space anything you want,” said Art Danielian, architect for the house. “I just gave it the name ‘dream room’ because whatever you dream of, that’s the room you want to do it in.”

* The master bathroom. Included are a two-person bathtub with Jacuzzi jets, an oversized aquarium that divides the tub from the shower, and heated towel racks. The closets have skylights and include a clothes display area designed to hold the next day’s outfit.

* The home theater. It is designed around a 60-inch television, a stereo system with surround sound and electronic games.

* The kitchen. The home’s focal point, it is a large room where two cooks can prepare a meal together. A rotating media console allows television viewing from both the kitchen and the adjoining dining nook.

* Home office command center. From computer terminals in two locations--the dream room and the dining nook--household functions such as security and lighting can be regulated.

* The exercise room. Included are exercise equipment, a mirror and exercise bar, a fold-down massage table, juice bar, television and VCR to play exercise tapes.
