These chairs don’t take a back seat to anyone.

Thayer Coggin, the High Point, N.C.-based furniture manufacturer, produces dramatic creations of yesteryear as well as those with a futuristic lilt.

A wing chair (about $1,300), part of the ‘50s Retro Collection, has scaled down “wings,” flared arms and a loose seat cushion for comfort.

The 12-piece retro collection, designed by Milo Baughman, captures the grace and humor of the past and melds it with the technology of today.

With its bold curves, double stitching and tapered legs, the Envoy chair (about $1,600) is a fit for many contemporary homes.

The chairs can be purchased in Orange County at Moda Italia, 18582 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach, or direct from Thayer Coggin, (910) 841-6000.

Just for Kicks

World Cup soccer is here at last, and, hoping the event is one people will want to have mementos of in their homes long after the championship is decided, manufacturers have turned out some off-beat items.

Neiman Marcus offers a hand-painted Limoges porcelain soccer ball tabatiere ($115) made in France; a soccer ball clock ($70) with quartz movement, brass case and engravable brass plate, and a coffee mug filled with wrapped milk chocolate soccer balls ($13.50). All are available by catalogue, (800) 944-9888, or at the store at Fashion Island Newport Beach.

For those who want to sock-it-to-’em on the walls, the Country Club collection by Village offers borders and complementing wallpapers meant to please the most fanatical of fans. The wallpaper ($22 per roll) and borders ($18 per spool) are available at home and decorating centers throughout Orange County.
