Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Juneteenth Celebrated in Palmdale

Share

The liberation of slaves in the United States more than a century ago will be celebrated here today with the Antelope Valley’s Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration.

The event stems from the day--June 19, 1865--slaves in Texas learned that Abraham Lincoln had set them free by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Although that proclamation had been signed more than two years before on Jan. 1, 1863, the news, according to folklore, traveled slowly and arrived by mule.

June 19 has been an official state holiday in Texas since 1980, but Juneteenth had been celebrated there for decades. Recognition of the day has been spreading to other parts of the country.

In Palmdale the event will be marked with food, entertainment, carnival rides, community choirs concerts, a fashion show and other activities.

The all-day celebration is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at McAdam Park, 38115 30th St. East.
