BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Rockies Unsure of Contending

Share

In their second year, with the new three-division format and with the San Francisco Giants struggling, are the Colorado Rockies ready to compete with the Dodgers at the top of the National League West?

Manager Don Baylor, whose Rockies trail the Dodgers by four games after Friday’s victory, isn’t sure.

“Consistency is what it takes to be in every pennant race,” Baylor said. “We’ve improved our defense, our hitting’s probably about the same as last year, but we’re still near last in pitching.

“We have to be at least somewhere in the middle of the pack or in the upper echelon of pitching--that’s where your consistency is. If we’re giving up five runs a game, that means we have to score six.”

Cory Snyder, not known for his leaping ability, saved two runs in the first inning Friday, jumping high to grab a deep shot by Charlie Hayes that was heading well over the left-field fence when Snyder brought it back for the third out with Andres Galarraga on first base.
