TAN, DON’T BURN: California tops the list of states in the number of melanoma cases expected this year. . . . Incidence of skin cancer has steadily increased over the past two decades, but there are ways to protect yourself. See Valley Briefing (B2).

SECOND FIDDLE: Today is Dad’s day, but that hasn’t automatically meant big business for Valley greeting card stores. In fact, said Sandra Zion, manager of John’s Hallmark Shop in Burbank, Father’s Day traditionally sells only about half the cards as Mother’s Day. . . . “Mother’s Day cards fill the whole aisle,” she said, “but Father’s Day splits it with graduation cards.”

YAROSLAVSKY II? She’s busy with religious and charitable activities, but Barbara Yaroslavsky is exploring the idea of replacing husband Zev on the Los Angeles City Council (B1). . . . If she throws her hat in the ring, she’ll find other hats already there belonging to former school board member Roberta Weintraub and Bet Tzedek Executive Director Michael Feuer, among others.

THE LIST MEANS LIFE: The Mohave ground squirrel has gotten a reprieve. A judge last week kept the 9-inch critter, which burrows in the Antelope Valley and Kern County, on the state’s endangered species list. . . . The move frustrates the plans of eager developers who want to move in on the rodent’s habitat. The squirrel won on a technicality (A3).
