David Roberti

* If the centerpiece of David Roberti’s campaign was “Gun control = Crime control,” then I think that policy can finally be considered dead, along with his political career. (Are you listening, Sen. Feinstein?)

He may have legislated as many Democrats into being felons as he did Republicans with his much-touted “assault rifle law” and they were just as angry as we are. (Are you listening, Sen. Feinstein?)

Perhaps he spent so much money running against the much-maligned National Rifle Assn. in his recall that he didn’t have anything left for the primary. (Are you listening, Sen. Feinstein?)

Sen. Feinstein, you better take heed. The NRA is growing and NRA Grassroots Members Councils are springing up in every town.

* In regard to Roberti’s recent defeat in the primary race for state treasurer, one might be able to accept his rationale of lack of funds at first. But a perfunctory analysis of the raw vote totals of Los Angeles County Democrats shows that Roberti lost by more than 18,000 votes in the county where his district is located. This alone would indicate that his defeat was not primarily related to an inability to pay for publicity statewide. Rather, it seems more related to the thorough understanding of his message and record by those in his own party who know him best. Other politicians should reflect on this possibility as well.

* I think the real reason Roberti lost was term limits, and that’s why we voted for term limits.
