BAD PR: The Supreme Court has cleared the way for employers to enforce English-only rules (A1). But what’s OK under the law may not be OK for worker relations. . . . Jeff Ornstein of Superior Industries in Van Nuys said the wheel-manufacturing company would keep publishing newsletters in Spanish for its large Latino work force. “It’s important to make the worker feel he is part of the company,” he said.

POTENTIAL: South African golfer Ernie Els won the U.S. Open on Monday (C1), but he’s not the only young pro with a bright future. The same goes for Alemany High grad David Berganio Jr., who made the cut before he faded over the weekend. . . . Bob Thomas of FORE Magazine in North Hollywood said Berganio should get a big “psychological boost” from his performance.

TAX FALL: The value of the Valley is going down, and you know where much of the blame goes. The quake, of course (Valley Business, Page 3). In fact, officials estimate that quake damage will slice $1.3 billion from property values. . . . John Crowner (above) of the county assessor’s office, stands by some of the boxes full of quake-relief sheets filed by property owners.

LION’S SHARE: Much has been written about the collaboration of singer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for Disney’s “The Lion King.” Still, don’t give them all the credit just yet. They also got help from gospel artist Andrae Crouch of Woodland Hills, who provided vocal and choral arrangements. . . . Crouch also has pitched in on Top 40 hits for Michael Jackson and Madonna.

NEW LOOK: This business of going civilian is a tough assignment for companies who made their money in defense. Take Datametrics Corp. in Chatsworth. It’s gone through quite a personality change, even putting commercial and defense workers in different buildings. . . . But the future is far from certain: Will people buy their new printers? See Valley Business, Page 10.
