Ship Captain Given 2 1/2 Years for Smuggling Chinese Immigrants

SAN FRANCISCO —
The captain of a freighter that carried about 300 illegal Chinese immigrants to San Francisco last year was sentenced Monday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison.
Chun Teh Chong, 39, a native of Taiwan, has been in jail since May, 1993, when he and the crew of the Pai Sheng were overtaken at sea by Coast Guard vessels.
Chong, who was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, is to be deported after his prison term.
