The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Abatement District is offering tips for residents with mosquito problems during breeding season, which starts with warm weather and extends to September.

Some mosquitoes transmit serious diseases. Female mosquitoes can transmit the St. Louis encephalitis virus, which can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Between 1984 and 1993, Los Angeles County had 25 reported cases of the virus, including one death.

District officials encourage residents to eliminate breeding sources such as standing water in buckets, planters, old tires, cans, jars and other containers. For residents who have ponds, the district will provide free fish that eat developing mosquito larvae. Information: (818) 814-9466.
