Camp Pendleton Enlists Cyclists for Benefit

Southern California’s largest swath of open, mostly undeveloped land is not a park, and most of its backcountry acreage remains off-limits to the public--trespassing more than just discouraged.

Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base just south of Orange County, has enough hill and canyon country to make mountain bikers’ mouths water.

Their chance comes Sunday, with the Mountain Bike Warehouse All-American Mountain Bike Classic, which benefits the San Diego USO. This is the second offering of the event, but last year it was held near Santa Barbara.

Three courses will be offered, all starting at Lake O’Neil in Oceanside. After the rides, participants will be offered refreshments and live entertainment in a picnic setting at the lake.

Experienced riders can test themselves with the 23-mile “Fire Cracker Blast,” over what is described by organizers as “grueling terrain.” The 15-mile “Patriot Tour” is designed for intermediates, while the seven-mile “Apple Pie Ride” is for novice riders.

Rides will be staggered in waves of about 10 riders. The 23-mile ride starts at 7:30 a.m., the 15-mile event at 8 a.m., and the seven-mile ride at 8:30 a.m. The event is not a race.

Rest stations with water, fruit, snack bars, first aid and mechanical assistance will be along each course. Organizers require participants to wear helmets (a limited number will be available for loan) and recommend that riders inspect their bikes before the ride.
