RESORT SPORT: Maybe the guests haven’t caught it, but employees at the Dana Point Resort have soccer fever. After all, the U.S. World Cup team is staying there. . . . The hotel’s employees have had their own soccer team for years, playing against employees of other local hotels like the neighboring Ritz-Carlton. But the U.S. team’s success has pumped renewed interest in the employees’ team. “This has become major stuff,” says hotel spokeswoman Penny Elia.

USE YOUR NOODLE: What was on the menu for the U.S. soccer team after they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history Wednesday? . . . Pasta. And lots of it. The hotel’s executive chef Peter Striffolino says team members consumed 25 pounds of pasta and 30 pounds of roast beef after beating Colombia 2-1. Laughs Striffolino: “I’d say these guys have a pretty healthy appetite.” . . . The team’s regular diet: Lots of vegetables, carbohydrates, nothing spicy. Wednesday night they indulged with chocolate mousse cake.

SHE’S BEEN THERE: Los Angeles Municipal Judge Patti Jo McKay, who’s handling the early stages of the O.J. Simpson case, has faced her share of courtroom stereotyping. McKay is a 1971 UC Irvine graduate, majoring in history before moving on to Hastings Law School. . . . Not long ago she was featured in a UC Irvine publication, and told the writer that her first case as a lawyer was in landlord-tenant court in New York City: “I walked up to the table and the judge asked me, ‘Where’s your lawyer?’ ”

WASHINGTON ROHR: Illegal immigrants know they have no ally in Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach). His latest bill is aimed at keeping them from sharing in the American tax dollar. His latest would bar illegal immigrants from receiving federal aid such as disaster relief loans or legal assistance. . . . “American taxpayers are spending billions,” he says. “This nonsense has got to stop.”
