Public Memorial Service for Franklin D. Murphy Scheduled

A public memorial service for Franklin D. Murphy is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at the UCLA Wight Art Gallery Plaza. A reception will follow in the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, which he established.

Murphy, former chancellor of UCLA and former chairman and chief executive officer of Times Mirror Co., died of cancer June 16 at the age of 78.

The family has asked that any memorial donations be made payable to UCLA Foundation (Murphy Memorial), 21520 University Research Library, UCLA, 405 Hilgard Ave., Los Angeles 90024-1575.

Considered the quintessential Renaissance man by his contemporaries, Murphy became a major player in the international art scene and in philanthropy. He served as chairman of the board of the National Gallery of Art, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which he helped found. He was also an active trustee and adviser to the J. Paul Getty Trust and the Ahmanson Foundation. Murphy served on the boards of four major multinational companies--BankAmerica Corp., Ford Motor Co., Hallmark Cards Inc. and Norton Simon Inc.

Parking for the memorial service is available in UCLA Structure 3 on Hilgard Avenue near Sunset Boulevard.
