It took only 5 1/3 innings for Dwight Gooden to sink to an all-time low.

That’s how long it took the Pittsburgh Pirates, led by Dave Clark’s two home runs and four runs batted in, to bomb the Met right-hander for nine runs Friday night en route to a 9-4 victory at New York.

It was the most runs given up by Gooden (3-4), an 11-year veteran, in a single game.

Denny Neagle (7-8) got the win, the Pirates’ sixth in seven games.

San Francisco 10, Colorado 3--Matt Williams hit his National League-leading 27th home run at Denver as the Giants broke a five-game losing streak.

San Francisco has won seven straight games at Mile High Stadium, dating to last year.

Seven Colorado pitchers combined to strike out a club-record 13.

Cincinnati 3, San Diego 2--Reggie Sanders tied the score with a bases-loaded single in the eighth and scored the game-winner on Bret Boone’s single in the 10th at Cincinnati as the streaking Reds rallied for their sixth consecutive victory.

Hector Carrasco (4-3) pitched two perfect innings for the victory.

Atlanta 9, Philadelphia 4--Tom Glavine, who had lost his last two starts, didn’t care that he had allowed six hits and four earned runs in six innings at Philadelphia. All he wanted was to pitch well enough to give the Braves a victory.

The key offensively was Mark Lemke’s three-run homer that capped a five-run fourth inning for Atlanta.

“Some of the numbers don’t show it,” said Glavine (8-7), who was 22-6 last season, “but I’m narrowing down the things I have to work on.”

Danny Jackson (9-2) was the loser.

Montreal 9, Florida 0--Darrin Fletcher assumed his new role as Montreal’s cleanup hitter with a flourish.

Fletcher, batting fourth while Larry Walker sits out a four-game suspension, hit two homers and drove in five runs at Montreal to help send the Marlins to their fifth straight loss.

The five RBIs match Fletcher’s career high, set one month ago against Florida in Miami.

“Exactly a month, huh?” he said. “Put me in the lineup on July 24 and August 24.”

Butch Henry (4-0) and two relievers allowed six hits.

St. Louis 3, Chicago 1--The bat of Mark Whiten and the arm of Allen Watson were the key elements of this victory at Chicago.

Watson (5-3), the winning pitcher, has now permitted only four runs in 29 1/3 innings over his last five starts.

Whiten drove in two runs with a third-inning single.
