CITY TERRACE : Affect of Patrols Is Focus of Meeting

Share

Residents will hear firsthand Tuesday how increased law enforcement patrols in their neighborhoods have affected crime and safety.

The City Terrace Coordinating Council community meeting at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church was called to address the efforts of the California Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department over the past four months. In earlier meetings, the council had asked for increased patrols on their streets to stop speeding drivers near schools, catch drunk drivers and discourage teen-agers from loitering after dark.

Last week, the Sheriff’s Department announced a slight drop in crime in a 7-square-mile area of City Terrace after issuing 246 tickets over the four-month period for curfew violations. Residents, some of whom had asked for the patrols out of concern for the teen-agers’ safety, said they noticed a drop in youths hanging out at night.

The Highway Patrol also increased enforcement in May, ticketing 120 drivers for traffic violations from May 12-31 with an added patrol force and a sobriety checkpoint on Memorial Day.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at St. Lucy’s, 3945 City Terrace Drive.
