On Roberti, Please Get Your Times Straight

* According to The Times, David Roberti’s upset loss in the treasurer’s race wasn’t a victory for gun owners because Roberti had originally intended to retire and then chose to make his failed run for higher office in an unsuccessful attempt to thwart the “gun lobby” because of the April 12 recall election. The Times’ argument is a fascinating non sequitur with no basis in fact.

It was reported as early as Aug. 8, 1993, that Roberti had said he would “probably” run for a state post rather than for the county Board of Supervisors. He announced his intention to seek the treasurer’s office on Sept. 24, 1993. The recall election wasn’t even qualified for the ballot by the secretary of state’s office until Jan. 24, 1994.
