Saturday’s Belgium-Holland soccer game, a rivalry with a 117-game history, had some similarity to UCLA-USC football. Like UCLA when it plays USC, Belgium approached this game as the ultimate showdown. But Holland, much like USC when it plays UCLA and has to go against Notre Dame the next Saturday, was less intense about the Belgians.
“This one’s a nice, friendly kind of match,” said writer Jaap De Groot of the Amsterdam paper De Telegraaf, “but Holland versus the Germans, that’s the big one.”
