VENTURA : Final Hearing Set on Cabrillo Annexation
After years of debate and months of working out details, the Ventura City Council will hold its final public hearing tonight on whether to annex Cabrillo Village, which would join the 1,000-resident community to the city of Ventura.
An unincorporated, 32-acre enclave surrounded by the city’s east side, Cabrillo Village is southeast of Telephone Road at Saticoy Avenue and the Santa Paula railroad tracks. The area was a farm labor camp in the 1930s and has since blossomed into a bustling Latino community.
The city is moving to annex Cabrillo Village at the request of the Local Agency Formation Commission, a state-sponsored county panel that regulates changes in boundaries for cities and other agencies.
Council members voted unanimously in March to initiate annexation, and some council members say they expect the final annexation vote today to go smoothly.
When Cabrillo Village residents held a meeting on the annexation before the council vote in March, only 90 people turned out, with 77 voting in favor.
