Irvine Store Will Be Honored for Work With Disabled Employee

An Irvine discount store will be honored today by the Orange County Employment Advocacy Network at a luncheon held to recognize employers who hire people with disabilities.

The Target store at 3750 Barranca Parkway will be named the most innovative employer of the year in Orange County for creating a position for a worker with a walking problem that included tasks he could accomplish despite his disability.

Store managers also modified the employee’s hours so that he could take the bus to and from work, said Kathy Moore, coordinator of the luncheon.

Today’s event will be hosted by KTLA-TV sportscaster Ed Arnold and will include a speech by Geri Jewell, an actress from the 1980s sitcom “Facts of Life.”

The Orange County Employment Advocacy Network is a consortium of agencies that help disabled people find jobs and assist employers with special job training, Moore said.

In addition to Target, three other Orange County businesses will be honored for their work with disabled employees.
