SIMI VALLEY : Center Renaming to Honor Nancy Reagan

Hoping to draw attention to their breast cancer detection and treatment center, officials at Simi Valley Hospital announced they would rename their facility for former First Lady Nancy Reagan.

The Simi Valley center, formerly known as the Aspen Breast Center, is home to a variety of machines designed to provide early detection of breast cancer.

The facility is one of a small number of hospitals in Ventura County that perform biopsies on breast cancer patients using a special needle, thereby eliminating the need for more invasive surgery, according to Alicia Gonzalez, a hospital spokeswoman.

Gonzalez said hospital officials decided to name the center in honor of the former First Lady because she has developed strong ties to Simi Valley since the Reagan Presidential Library opened there.

Also, she said, “being that Nancy Reagan is a survivor of breast cancer herself, we wanted to put her up as an example to other women,” Gonzalez said.

Nancy Reagan will attend a private ceremony Thursday to rededicate the center in her honor.
