‘Franglais’
I was amused to read Scott Kraft’s great article, “After le Brainstorming , French Start War on Words,” about the “march of English words and ‘Franglais’ into French” ( World Report, June 28). It sounds as if the tide of the English Channel is turning and that the Anglo-Saxons subjugated by the Norman Conquest of 1066 are reeling with delight. For the French to believe they can somehow legislate their noble tongue is absurd. Just ask anyone who has attended an English academy.
