MOORPARK : Senior Center Likely to Hire Coordinator

Share

The Moorpark City Council is expected to accept an $8,000 grant from the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging to pay for a part-time coordinator at the city’s senior center.

The coordinator would help Carol Ghens, director of the center. Ghens, who won an award from Gov. Pete Wilson for her work at the 1 1/2-year-old center, said she is stretched to the limit.

“There are so many things I need help with,” Ghens said. “We have a lot of volunteers, but it just goes beyond what volunteers can do.”

Christine Adams, director of the city’s Community Services Department, said Ghens is in part a victim of her own success. The center once was seeing about 50 people, but more than 600 use its services now. And each day new people come in, Adams said.

“She’s the only paid staffer at the center,” Adams said. “Another employee would free her to work on new ideas to make the center even better.”
