Share

A charity group that provides emergency food and shelter to South County’s homeless people will benefit from a jazz and swing concert at Leisure World on Sunday.

The “Hooked on Music Program” will showcase local groups covering classic sounds from acts like the Andrews Sisters, the Platters, the Mills Brothers and the Inkspots.

The cost is $5 for the show, which starts at 6 p.m. in Leisure World’s Clubhouse Three, 23822 Avenida Sevilla. Look for the Gate Three sign off Moulton Parkway between El Toro Road and Laguna Hills Drive.

Performing on Sunday will be the Ferdie Furtado Quintet, the Society Swing Trio and Johnny Smith and the New Inkspots. The show will be the first musical benefit sponsored by Saddleback Community Outreach.

The organization provides emergency rent assistance, food and clothing, helps to pay utility bills and offers many other services.

“South County may appear to be the land of affluence, populated by people who live in well-kept tract and custom homes,” said Jeanne Gormick, spokeswoman for Saddleback Community Outreach. “But these stereotypes mask the whole truth. We have needy people right here in our own back yard.”

Gormick added that donations are particularly needed in the summer because community contributions are generally lower during the hot months.
