OXNARD : State Employment Office to Relocate

The state Employment Development Department office in Oxnard, the site of a shooting that left three people dead and seven wounded, is finalizing plans to move to a new location.

The Oxnard office will move from its present site at 1960 N. C St. to a vacant grocery store at 5th Street and Ventura Road. A move-in date has not yet been determined, EDD spokeswoman Suzanne Schroeder said.

The new site will have extra guards, bulletproof glass and locks on the doors inside the facility. The old location was fitted with the extra measures shortly after the shooting, Schroeder said.

Apparently upset about repeated job rejections, Alan Winterbourne burst into the unemployment office Dec. 2 with a shotgun and pistol, killing three people and wounding seven others.

Winterbourne also shot and killed a police officer during a car chase before he was killed by police outside a Ventura unemployment office.

Employees had asked that the Oxnard office be moved, citing memories of the macabre event, in which two of their co-workers lost their lives.
