A third suspect in the shooting of soccer player Andres Escobar turned himself in Wednesday.

Police said Pedro Gallon Henao, brother of another suspect in the killing, surrendered to the prosecutor general’s office in Medellin, Colombia’s third-largest city.

Escobar was shot to death in the parking lot of a restaurant in Medellin, apparently for accidentally scoring an own goal in Colombia’s 2-1 loss to the United States. The third suspect was present during the slaying, police said, without giving further details.

One suspect, Humberto Munoz, admitted to shooting Escobar, police said. Munoz was the driver for a second suspect, rancher Santiago Gallon Henao, whom authorities said bet heavily on the Colombian team and was upset at having lost.

Police were investigating whether the Gallon brothers are involved in drug trafficking.

A third Gallon brother has been implicated in the laundering of drug money.

In another blow to Colombia’s soccer establishment, the head of a major team resigned to protest the killing.

“I can’t accept soccer as a stage for violence and uncontrolled passions instead of pleasure and exercise,” Pedro Chang, general manager of the America club of Cali, said in his resignation letter, sent Tuesday.
