BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Reynolds May Seek Trade or Release

Second baseman Harold Reynolds, exasperated by his reserve role, said he will ask General Manager Bill Bavasi to trade him, or possibly even release him by the All-Star break.

Reynolds, a two-time all-star and three-time Gold Glove winner, has started only three games since June 16.

“It’s very frustrating, especially when the team is losing and I know I can contribute,” Reynolds said. “Everybody has a chance to win a job but me.”

The Angels have been trying to trade Reynolds, but talks with the Seattle Mariners stalled when the Mariners decided to promote shortstop Alex Rodriguez and move shortstop Felix Fermin to second.

Reynolds, who is batting .239 and has 10 stolen bases, lost his platoon job when the Angels moved Damion Easley from third to second base.

It has been a month since Marcel Lachemann was hired as manager of the Angels, but Yankee starter Jim Abbott still is trying to get used to it.

“I thought Buck Rodgers was a very good manager,” Abbott said. “I was surprised the Angels would go another direction.

“Really, I was surprised that Lach came back. I really respect him. He could have gone on being one of the most respected pitching coaches, but he decided to take a challenge. It was a bold move.”

Catcher Chris Turner was robbed of a spot in the Angel record book when Yankee second baseman Pat Kelly made a diving catch of Turner’s line drive in the fifth inning, ending his streak at seven consecutive hits.

Turner could have tied the franchise record held by Jim Fregosi, Dan Ford and Bobby Grich. He shook off his misfortune and got two more hits for a three-hit game.
