BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Reynolds Might Seek Trade or Release

Second baseman Harold Reynolds, exasperated by his reserve role, said he will ask General Manager Bill Bavasi to trade him, or possibly release him by the All-Star break.

Reynolds, a two-time all-star and three-time Gold Glove winner, has started only three games since June 16.

“It’s very frustrating, especially when the team is losing and I know I can contribute,” Reynolds said. “Everybody has a chance to win a job but me.”

The Angels have been trying to trade Reynolds, but talks with the Seattle Mariners stalled when the Mariners optioned second baseman Rich Amaral (Estancia High, Orange Coast College) to triple-A Calgary to make room for shortstop Alex Rodriguez. Shortstop Felix Fermin was moved to second.

Reynolds, who is batting .239 and has 10 stolen bases, lost his platoon job when the Angels moved Damion Easley from third to second base.

Amaral, 32, was benched during Monday night’s game in Baltimore by Manager Lou Piniella after committing two errors. Amaral has made a team-high 15 errors this season. He was hitting .276 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in in 66 games this season.

Rodriguez, 18, the first player chosen in the June 1993 draft, was recalled Wednesday night from double-A Jacksonville (Fla.) of the Southern League.

Catcher Chris Turner was robbed of a spot in the Angel record book when Yankee second baseman Pat Kelly made a diving catch of Turner’s line drive in the fifth inning, ending his streak at seven consecutive hits.

Turner could have tied the franchise record held by Jim Fregosi, Dan Ford and Bobby Grich. He shook off his misfortune and got two more hits for a three-hit game.
