AND ONE MORE THING: It will take sales of 150,000 or so for the Rolling Stones’ new album, “Voodoo Lounge,” to debut at or near No. 1 on the pop charts next week. That could be a slam-dunk for the band, without much competition among new releases. “The Symphonic Rolling Stones,” the collection of Stones classics performed by an orchestra, is having a tougher time hitting the top. It’s currently No. 3 on Billboard magazine’s classical chart, stuck behind the Benedictine Monks’ “Chant” and the soundtrack to the movie “The Piano.”

The album’s executive producer, RCA Victor vice president Steve Vining, is hopeful that the new Stones album will push interest in the “Symphonic” album and put it over the hurdle. His sights aren’t quite so high as the pop figures, though. In the classical world, he says, an album can hit No. 1 with sales of . . . 4,000.

The (relative) success of the Stones project, though, has spurred more developing rock-classical crossovers: A Procol Harum album is being finished now, while Who and Jimi Hendrix projects are in development.*
