Fullerton Outfielder Powell Agrees to Terms With Giants

Cal State Fullerton outfielder Dante Powell said Tuesday he has agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants, who selected him with the 22nd pick in the June free-agent draft. He said he is planning to sign a contract today.

Powell indicated that the signing bonus was more than the $425,000 he turned down when he was drafted out of high school three years ago.

Powell, a graduate of Long Beach Millikan, was a supplemental selection by Toronto between the first and second round in the 1991 draft but decided to play college baseball.

Powell hit .307 as a freshman at Fullerton, .335 as a sophomore and .305 with 52 runs batted in and a team-high 48 stolen bases last season.

The Titans advanced to the College World Series, but Powell’s performance was hampered by a pulled hamstring muscle suffered in the regional championship victory over Oklahoma State.
