Boston Fed Names First Female President: Cathy Minehan, 47, senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, had been acting president since Richard Syron left in April to become chairman of the American Stock Exchange. Her appointment, effective immediately, was applauded by critics who have charged that the Fed’s top ranks are dominated by white men. Minehan is an expert on payments systems. She began her career with the New York Fed in 1968, and she was made senior vice president there in 1987, becoming the first woman to achieve that rank at any of the 12 regional Federal Reserve System banks. She was named first vice president and chief operating officer of the Boston Fed in 1991.
