Club Review : Dressing Up for the Dance at Dragstrip

Question: Where can you see a 6-foot-4 Pippi Longstocking look-alike moshing to a Green Day record with an equally tall spaceman dressed in a baby-doll outfit?

A) Dragstrip 66.

B) MTV’s “Liquid Television.”

C) In your wildest dreams.

If you answered A, you’re probably already hip to L.A.’s best gay dance club. Not only do the inventive costumes allow patrons of the monthly club in Silver Lake to become a part of the night’s entertainment, but the enticing music mix is also a huge treat for those bored with dance-club standards.

The unpredictable choices of deejay Paul V., who, along with Dragstrip 66 host Mr. Dan, started the club 1 1/2 years ago, keeps the dance floor lively till the 4 a.m. closing time. A recent set included selections from the Edgar Winter Group, KISS, Suzi Quatro and the Beastie Boys.

The 450-capacity club, which is held on the second Saturday of each month at Rudolpho’s restaurant, benefits from its laid-back locale by inspiring a very informal, comfortable attitude. The only decor that even comes close to competing with the customers is a Jean Harlow portrait pinned up behind the bar.

Dragstrip 66, which includes costume contests, offers themes to get guests in the mood. If you missed July’s “Muscle Beach Bikini Party,” which prompted many guests to don bathing suits and pumps, you’ve still got ample time to find something groovy for August’s “Hippie Chicks . . .” motif.
