PACOIMA : Students Show Pride, Art in State Capitol

Share

“Pacoima Pride” is going statewide.

About 100 pieces of children’s artwork featured in March’s “Pacoima Pride” arts project will be displayed in the State Capitol annex in Sacramento starting today and running through July 29.

“It’s a great opportunity for people from all over the state and all over the country to see the talent we have in Pacoima,” said Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar), who arranged for the Capitol display.

“It’s just a way to highlight that there are good kids everywhere and you shouldn’t believe all the stereotypes.”

The Capitol Annex Exhibition, operated by the Joint Rules Committee, was designed to provide a forum to showcase the artistic talents of California students and to encourage school-age children to pursue art.

Using crayons, markers and paints, the Pacoima students depicted scenes of family and community pride. The project is designed to foster positive feelings about a community that has been stereotyped for its crime and economic shortcomings more than its accomplishments, making it the butt of jokes on the “Tonight Show.”

The contest, sponsored by Transworld Bank in Pacoima, drew entries from about 2,000 students at Haddon Avenue Elementary School, Mary Immaculate School, Pacoima Elementary School and the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center.
