Driver Rescued After Car Falls Into Canyon

A woman lost control of her car on Entrada Drive near Topanga Canyon Boulevard early Friday morning and plunged 300 feet down a canyon, authorities said.

The woman was trapped in the auto on a canyon slope for two hours as 20 members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and County Fire Department, including an urban search and rescue team, extricated her with cables.

She was airlifted to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition with a back injury, a hospital spokeswoman said.

“She was in pain but conscious,” said Jim Goodwin, one of the first county firefighters at the scene.

The doors of her car were stuck and all the windows were smashed in, he said. “We brought her out through the window.”

Rescuers were called about 6 a.m. when residents of the area were alerted to the crash because the woman’s car alarm went off several times, authorities said.

“Unfortunately, it is a common occurrence for drivers to lose control and go over the canyon,” Goodwin said.
