Dwight Gooden, the New York Met pitcher who was suspended 60 days on June 28 by Major League Baseball for violating his drug-therapy program, has returned to the New York City area to start outpatient care.

The sessions are part of Gooden’s continuing after-care program, which is being monitored by Major League Baseball. Details of the program weren’t disclosed.

The Kansas City Royals put third baseman Gary Gaetti on the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-handed pitcher Chris Haney from triple-A Omaha.

Gaetti, who was put on the disabled list retroactive to July 5, has inflammation in his lower back. Gaetti was batting .282 with 10 home runs and led the Royals with 47 RBIs.

The Boston Red Sox claimed infielder Stan Royer on waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals and designated pitcher Sergio Valdez for assignment.
