AS THE CROWE FLIES: For many ‘60s aficionados, the party scene in Russ Meyer’s “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” is the quintessential portrayal of the era’s drug-addled decadence.

How will a re-creation of that play in the post-”Just Say No” ’90s? The Black Crowes are planning to find out.

With that scene in mind, the Georgia band recently held a party--with all the psychedelic accessories--at the San Fernando Valley recording studio where it was finishing its upcoming album. Singer Chris Robinson readily admitted that many of the participants were, how shall we put it, chemically enhanced.

Video cameras were there to capture the whole bacchanal, and the band plans to include scenes in a long-form home video that will come out sometime after the album is released in the fall.

“It’s part of their lives,” says Crowes manager Pete Angelus about the drug references. “The reality of the situation is the Crowes have always chosen to be honest about it, before people jumped on the pro-marijuana bandwagon.”

How will Warner Bros., the band’s distributor, feel about releasing this video? A spokesman at the company says that there’s no way to know until they see the footage.

“They might have some things to say about it,” says Angelus. “But I don’t intend to listen and I don’t think the band does either. If someone at Warner Bros. (didn’t want to release the tape) I would guess we’d have a substantial fight on our hands.”
