ROCKY SESSION: For Wednesday’s 25th anniversary of the first moon walk, the San Juan Institute plans to celebrate in fitting style--by showing off its moon rocks (B1). The scientific think tank will hold a free lecture that night about the historic landing. You can also view the moon through its telescopes, and see moon samples from all six Apollo landings. . . . Says its director, Douglas Nash: “People find moon rocks fascinating, but some expect them to be made of gold.”

TWO DOZEN WALLYS? Wally George, Orange County’s staunchly conservative host of TV’s syndicated “Hot Seat,” tapes his 12th anniversary show later this month. This year, he’s had to concentrate on a series of medical problems more than the targets of his usual weekly barbs. George recently overcame a serious bout of kidney trouble and will face surgery for prostate cancer in August. . . . But he’s optimistic: “I’m looking forward to doing 12 more years here.”

HIT IT: Jury duty doesn’t have to be a pain. When Superior Court Judge William R. Froeberg steps off the bench to briefly meet with lawyers, the music is turned on. . . . The judge has ordered early rock or easy listening songs for jurors during such breaks in the action. He also permits jurors to have snacks and sends his bailiff and clerk to chat with them when they can. (No talking about the case, of course.) Says Froeberg: “Court is tense enough, why add more stress?” Declares one juror: “I have to say, it’s been nice serving in this courtroom.”

BADGERING THE POLICE: In Fullerton, the police will soon be wearing new badges: oval-shaped plates with the city logo and picture of the police building. The old badges showed the state seal. Councilman Don Bankhead, a former police captain, says it’s to boost police morale: “The officers work for a city agency and this badge represents that city.” They cost almost $11,000, but part will be offset by officers buying their old badges as keepsakes. No price has been set yet.
