BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Salmon Taken Out After Injuring Leg

Share

Tim Salmon, who suffered a strained right hamstring in Boston on July 6 and sat out the next two games, was removed in the seventh inning Sunday after re-injuring his leg on a series of plays in right field.

“I’m concerned,” he said. “It feels worse right now than it did the first time I hurt it. I’m trying to be smart with it, but when you’re in the outfield and chasing down balls, it’s hard to govern that.”

Salmon said he first felt pain Sunday in the seventh inning while sprinting in pursuit of a triple down the right-field line by Baltimore’s Jeff Tackett.

“The last 20 feet, I really extended and it was grabbing pretty bad,” he said. “Then I had to go hard after the double by Brady (Anderson). And by the time I went into the gap to get the ball (hit by Cal Ripken Jr.) and made the throw to the plate, it was really sore.”

How impressed was Chili Davis with Baltimore starter Jamie Moyer, who gave up seven hits and two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory Sunday?

“We just weren’t patient enough with him,” Davis said. “He’s the kind of pitcher you have to wait and make him make mistakes. It’s not like he’s a power pitcher. He can’t throw the ball by you. Hell, he can’t throw the ball by him.

Manager Marcel Lachemann took some of the blame for Sunday’s loss, indicating he should have filled out the lineup card differently. “I’m kind of kicking myself,” he said after the game. “I probably should have started Bo (Jackson). I should’ve put the big guy in there.” . . . Rafael Palmeiro’s first-inning three-run homer against Russ Springer marked a club-record 10th consecutive game in which an Angel starter has given up a home run. And Palmeiro continues to punish Angel pitchers this season. He has 22 hits in 45 at-bats, a .490 average, with five homers and 17 RBIs in 12 games. . . . Lachemann on Springer giving up a three-run homer and a two-run homer in three innings: “The fact that they happened isn’t nearly as bothersome as where they happened in the strike zone. He was up in the zone all day and you’re not going to get away with that against this club.”
