Crayola crayons, one of the most familiar smells of childhood, are about to throw the younger generation for a fruit loop.

Binney & Smith Co. is introducing 16 crayons containing miniature capsules that burst with aroma as they are used. The scents include cherries, chocolate, licorice, bananas and bubble gum. “This idea smelled like a winner from day one because it brought a whole new dimension to the coloring experience,” spokesman Brad Drexler said.

Binney & Smith turned up its nose at some scents, including blue cheese, leather, new car, peanut butter and skunk.
