Fed OKs BankAmerica’s Purchase of Continental Bank: The $1.9-billion merger, announced in January, will strengthen the position of San Francisco-based BankAmerica Corp. as the nation’s second-largest banking company and give it a major presence in Midwestern business banking, the specialty of Continental Bank Corp. of Chicago, BankAmerica said. Continental will be renamed Bank of America Illinois.
