USAir Ground Workers Choose Union: The International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers bested the United Steelworkers of America for the chance to represent the nearly 8,000 workers who handle baggage and cargo for the Arlington, Va.-based airline, the National Mediation Board said. The board allows two working days for any allegation of election interference to be filed. If no such claim is filed by 5 p.m. Friday, the panel will certify the Machinists as the collective bargaining agent for the employees, who have not had union representation since 1990. The Teamsters lost the right to represent the workers a year after USAir and Piedmont Aviation merged.
