Juan Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the 14th inning, his second homer of the night, and the Texas Rangers overcame five Cleveland homers to defeat the Indians, 13-11, at Cleveland in a game that lasted nearly six hours.

The Indians lost 11-game winner Mark Clark to a fractured right wrist in the third inning, then squandered the remainder of what had been a five-run lead when Manuel Lee hit a three-run homer against Jeff Russell in the ninth, tying the score at 11-11.

The homer was Lee’s first in 321 at-bats since last Sept. 3, and only his 18th since coming to the majors in 1985.

Larry Casian, the Indians’ sixth pitcher, yielded a one-out single in the 14th by Jose Canseco--his fourth hit--before Gonzalez drove his 16th home run into the bleachers in left. Gonzalez also homered in the third.

Albert Belle, Eddie Murray, Jim Thome, Paul Sorrento and Wayne Kirby homered for the Indians, who have hit 10 homers in the last two games.

The Rangers matched a team record with 22 hits and used eight pitchers. The Indians had 17 hits.

New York 1, Oakland 0--Melido Perez outdueled the A’s Steve Ontiveros and Mike Stanley hit a home run in the fifth at Oakland for the game’s only run.

The teams combined for only five hits, two by New York.

Perez pitched eight innings for his fifth consecutive victory. The right-hander struck out five and walked one. Steve Howe pitched the ninth for his 11th save.

Perez retired 16 consecutive batters in one stretch.

Toronto 9, Minnesota 2--Ed Sprague homered and tied his career-high with four runs batted in and Juan Guzman pitched eight strong innings at Toronto to give the Blue Jays their fourth consecutive win and ninth in 13 games.

The Twins, who were swept in the three-game series, lost for the 10th time in a row on the road and 23rd time in 30 games overall as they fell into last place in the AL Central for the first time since May 14.

Guzman (10-9) gave up five hits in eight innings and struck out four. He lost his shutout in the eighth, but has won his last four starts.

Milwaukee 11, Kansas City 1--Jose Valentin, one of five rookies in the Brewers’ lineup, hit his first major league grand slam, and another rookie, Matt Mieske, drove in three runs at Milwaukee.

Milwaukee scored five times with two outs in the sixth.

Dave Nilsson had tripled in the sixth when Felix Jose barely missed his sinking liner in right. When Jose got to his feet, he looked around for several seconds, not realizing the ball was between his legs.

Mieske followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. After consecutive walks, Valentin hit Tom Gordon’s first pitch off the right-field foul pole for his seventh homer.
