TUSTIN : Council Tightens Anti-Smoking Law
The City Council has tentatively approved stricter regulations on smoking in public, but the action has been superseded in large part by a measure signed into law Thursday by Gov. Pete Wilson.
Wilson’s office called the law the nation’s toughest statewide anti-smoking law.
Tustin still has the option of regulating smoking in workplaces not covered by the state law, which is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 1995.
The council could decide to regulate smoking in tobacco shops, warehouses, ventilated employee lounges and areas not covered by the state law.
When Tustin’s revised smoking ordinance came before the council on Monday, the council voted 3-2 in favor. Voting for the tougher regulations were Mayor Thomas R. Saltarelli, Mayor Pro Tem Jim Potts and Councilwoman Tracy Worley.
Voting against the stricter smoking regulations were Councilmen Jeffery Thomas and Michael J. Doyle.
