State Grant to Add Oil Recycling Sites

Share

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has accepted a $346,522 state grant to establish four new collection centers where residents can drop off used oil.

Two of the collection centers will be at Ventura Harbor, another at Channel Islands Harbor and one in Piru or the La Conchita area, said Norma Camacho, household hazardous wastes coordinator for Ventura County.

“We’re hoping that they can be fully operational by October or November,” Camacho said. “It’s a definite problem . . . people cannot throw used oil on the ground, or in any body of water.”

Camacho said county officials, who accepted the grant Tuesday, decided to put the collection centers at the harbors and possibly one in a remote area of Piru because residents frequently illegally dump their used oil in those areas.

The stations will allow residents to drop off used motor oil and will offer a 4-cent rebate for every quart customers turn in.

The grant is funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, which can certify local gas stations as official motor oil recycling sites. Sixteen publicly certified used oil collection centers are scattered throughout Ventura County.
