Nelson Wins to Advance in Hardcourt Championships

Jim Nelson of Newport Beach held on to beat Herman Ahlers of Dana Point, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the men’s 55 division of the U.S. Tennis Assn. men’s national hardcourt championships Friday at the Lindborg Club.

In double matches in the 50 division, Steve Field of Laguna Beach and Fred Shelley of La Jolla defeated Geof Grant of Mill Valley and Gordon Smith of Greenbrae, 7-5, 6-3; Jackie Cooper of La Quinta and Robyn Ray of Newport Beach beat Owen Gillen of Aspen and Billy Higgins of Yorba Linda, 6-2, 6-1, and Dick Leach of Laguna Beach and Ken Stuart of Newport Beach defeated Jim Parker of Houston and Ken Robinson of San Carlos by default.

In the 55 division in doubles, Larry Dodge of Piedmont and Lenny Lindborg of Laguna Beach defeated Ed Lane of Fresno and George Sarantos of Fresno, 6-2, 7-5; Bob Duesler and Jim Nelson, both of Newport Beach, beat Neil Hurlbut of Tucson, Ariz., and Joe Martin of Morrison, Colo., 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Herman Ahlers of Dana Point and Hank Leichtfried of Irvine beat Ron Skaggs of Upland and Barry Walraven of Monrovia by default.
