BUT GENTLEMEN MARRY BRUNETTES by Anita Loos (Penguin: $7.95; 97 pp.). The sequel to “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” continues the delicious saga of the quintessential gold-digger, Lorlei Lee, now married to the scion of a wealthy Philadelphia family. Lorelei mauls the English language with the careless glee of a child encountering a puppy, offering such trenchant observations as, “No matter how inferior your complex is, you can always meet very promanent people in New York, who have not got any more brains than you have.” Most of the story is devoted to the highly unconventional life of Dorothy, Lorelei’s cynical friend from the Ziegfeld Follies, who fails to appreciate the sterling qualities of millionaires: “The worst that can happen is alimony.”
