HOW THE RAMS LINE UP FOR ’94 : ON SPECIAL TEAMS

Share

Kicker

* The Starter: Tony Zendejas

* At First Glance: Push him back to the 50

* Analysis: Rams aren’t even going through the pretense of hiring someone to challenge Zendejas in training camp. Now he will have all the time in the world to work on field-goal attempts between the 40- and 50-yard lines. Zendejas went 0 for 3 from beyond 40 short of 50, and 6 for 8 from the 50 on back.

Punter

* The Starter: Sean Landeta

* Summer Vacation: Matt Turk

* At First Glance: No concerns

* Analysis: Rams went through three punters last season and settled on Landeta, who averaged 43.5 yards a kick after being released by Giants. New special teams coach Wayne Sevier was fan of Landeta’s work in New York. Turk is nickname given to guy who must cut players each year, not to guy who will get cut.

Returners

* Kickoffs: Bailey, Lewis

* Punts: Bailey

* At First Glance: More zip, more yards

* Analysis: Rams fielded worst return teams in league, but in Bailey they have someone who can make the first defender miss. Lewis worked as top-flight returner for Chargers, but to stay here he will have to step up work as wide receiver.
