Finding a job can be a difficult, frustrating experience that takes a considerable amount of time and dedication. Here are some helpful hints from employment counselors and job seekers alike.

* Join trade groups representing the industry you’re interested in and subscribe to their newsletter, which may include job listings and networking opportunities.

* Check out job listings on computer networks like CompuServe and Prodigy. Computer networks offer excellent networking opportunities by using their specialized bulletin boards. Keep in mind that users may be communicating with someone in another part of the country.

* Order personal business cards, including your address and phone number(s).

* Attend job fairs, with resume and business cards in hand.

* Use the services of college placement offices and career centers.

* Read newspaper classified ads regularly and watch for news stories that may provide tips on expanding companies and industries.

* Enroll in courses to meet others with similar interests and improve your skills, but don’t immediately go back to school just to get an advanced degree in some specialty.

* Volunteer at a nonprofit organization to gain more experience with people, office procedures and organizational skills.

* Keep a positive attitude and never quit.
